GRANT OVERVIEW


INTENT:

To temporarily activate vacant and underused spaces through the arts.

DESCRIPTION:

This program provides funding for communities to temporarily provide vacant spaces to artists and arts organizations for the purposes of artistic use and public programming. The program is designed to activate publicly accessible spaces, increase community vibrancy, and provide space for artistic expression and public engagement.

ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS:

  • Units of local government
  • Non-profit organizations (501c3 only)
  • Federally recognized tribes

PROJECT CRITERIA: 

Eligible projects may include:

  • Artist studios
  • Galleries / Exhibition space
  • Performance space
  • Installations
  • Pop-up cinemas
  • Outdoor spaces

Projects must re-imagine an existing space for a new arts-centered purpose, be experiential in nature, have a community engagement component and be accessible to the public during portions of the project length. Retail and for-profit start-up projects are not eligible.

Eligible expenses may include:

  • Some general operating expenses during the life of the project (venue rental, utilities, admin support for the space, etc.)
  • Artist fees
  • Supplies and materials

Expenses may NOT include:

  • Food
  • Receptions / Galas / fundraisers
  • construction costs, permanent improvements to a facility, or improvements that increase the value of the property.
  • Insurance and legal fees
  • purchases of individual items worth $5,000 or higher.
  • Honorariums (artists and contractors must be paid as fees for services rendered.)
  • Please see guidelines and NEA website for additional federal cost principals and unallowable expenses.

MAXIMUM REQUEST:

$10,000

MATCH REQUIREMENT:

dollar for dollar (1:1)
The total project cost must be at least twice the amount of the grant request.
The match requirement must consist of at least 25% cash expenses provided by the applicant.
In-kind non-monetary donations and volunteer hours may be counted up to 50% of the required match.

MATCH EXCEPTION:

Organizations in communities with populations of 15,000 or fewer:
In-kind non-monetary donations may be counted as 100% of the required match
