2019 International Trade Day Speakers Bill Cooper Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer of Bergkamp Inc. Bill Cooper is currently the Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer of Bergkamp Inc. and lives in Salina, Kansas where the corporate headquarters is located. Bill joined Bergkamp in 2007 and has held previous positions as Vice President and General Manager of the Customer Business Unit, Director of Global Sales, and the Director of Sales. Prior to Joining Bergkamp, Bill held positions as District Manager, Branch Manager, Service and Parts Manager, and Sales Representative for both publically held and privately owned construction equipment rental and distribution companies. He has served on several non-profit boards and is currently active as a volunteer serving veterans that have recently transitioned off of active duty and on the local YMCA Board of Directors. Bill graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. He enjoys fishing, exploring off road in his Jeep, photography, and being a grandfather to his 6 granddaughters from his 3 adult daughters and their husbands. With 16 years of experience at Excel Industries, Chad Lane became the company’s Vice President of Strategic Marketing and Business Development in June 2018, after serving as Vice President of Global and Emerging Business since 2014. His previous responsibilities at Excel include Director of Global Strategy, International Business Development Manager, and Strategic Planning Manager, as well as one year spent working in production and warehouse operations. Chad has led Excel’s global business since 2006, and guided the company to winning the Kansas Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award in 2013. Chad is part of the third generation of his family’s leadership of Excel Industries. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Wichita State University and his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Chang Lu International Trade Representative, Kansas Department of COmmerce Mr. Chang Lu is an International Trade Representative at the Kansas Department of Commerce. His primary focus is to assist Kansas companies with their exporting efforts and to attract foreign investment into the state. Prior to joining the department, Mr. Lu worked at the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the Utah Department of Commerce and the Utah State Legislature. He received his MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management with an emphasis in global development, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brigham Young University. April Chiang International Project Manager, Kansas Department of Commerce April Chiang manages trade and investment projects between Kansas and Greater China Region. She also manages the Kansas International Trade Show Assistance Program (KITSAP), as well as the Governor’s Exporter of the Year program. In her 17 years with the agency, She has worked on numerous business initiatives with companies and government entities between Kansas and China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Prior to joining the agency, April had years of managerial work experience in apparel fashion field with several multi-national companies. April also was with KPMG Taiwan Office as the Executive Recruiter. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Culture University in Taiwan, a training at International Business Education And Research (IBEAR) Program in University of Southern California, and an MBA from Washburn University in Topeka. Donna A. Johnson President & CEO Pinnacle Technology, Inc. Donna Johnson has over 35 years of experience in applied research and engineering projects. Before opening Pinnacle in 1995, she held positions as Director of Engineering & Research with several small businesses and worked for various federal and state organizations including the U.S. House of Representatives, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Connecticut. She is an oceanographer by training. Donna has served on the Board of Directors for Kansas Inc., Lawrence Technology Association, Board of Trustees for the Kansas University Center for Research, and the EPSCoR Committee for the Kansas Board of Regents. Dan Billen Partner, Primary Color Music Primary Color Music (based in Lawrence, KS) is a team of music-lovers who are dedicated to crafting perfect song and sound for visual media. Dan Billen is the brother of PCM’s CEO, Sam Billen, who founded the company in 2009. Sam originally hired Dan in 2015 as a composer/music producer and additionally tasked Dan with creating and maintaining the company’s visual brand identity. Primary Color Music quickly grew from regional markets to the global level, working with some of the biggest brands and marketing agencies in the world. Dan was eventually promoted to managing a team of composers and was responsible for acquiring new business, negotiating budgets and building lasting client relationships. Primary Color Music currently does around 35% of its work outside of the US, and maintains a satellite office in Tokyo, Japan. Before joining his brother at Primary Color Music, Dan was the Art Director at Jones Huyett Partners (Topeka, KS) and is now the Creative Director of Sprout Creative (Topeka, KS) while he continues on with Primary Color Music as a partner and representative of the company. Melissa Birch Associate Professor, University of Kansas Melissa Birch is an Associate Professor in the School of Business at the University of Kansas where she teaches courses on International Business and Business in Latin America. She is the Co-Director of the Center for Global Business Studies and served as Director of KU’s Title VI-designated Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) from 1999-2011. Melissa serves as the Chair of the Kansas International Trade Coordinating Council and is a member of the Mid-America District Export Council. She holds a B.A in Anthropology and Latin American Studies from New College in Sarasota, Florida and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois. Melissa M. Brewer Senior associate, Kelley Drye Melissa Brewer is a senior associate in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Her practice primarily focuses on international trade related issues, including representing domestic industries in U.S. antidumping and countervailing duty proceedings against unfairly priced and subsidized foreign imports. In this capacity, Melissa practices before the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. International Trade Commission, Office of the United States Trade Representative, and has appeared before the U.S. Court of International Trade and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Melissa also has experience counseling clients on issues pertaining to the North American Free Trade Agreement and the agreements of the World Trade Organization. Melissa’s prior government experience provides her with invaluable insight into the decision-making processes involved in trade cases. Prior to joining Kelley Drye, Melissa served as an attorney advisor to the Office of the Chief Counsel for Trade Enforcement & Compliance at the United States Department of Commerce. In that capacity, she drafted petitions, motions, briefs, and other written submissions in cases before the Court of International Trade, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the WTO Dispute Settlement Body. She has extensive experience dealing with the domestic implementation of WTO decisions pursuant to Sections 123 and 129 of the Uruguay Round Agreements Act. Melissa also advised department officials on administrative law, judicial precedent, agency regulations and practice, and customs liquidation issues in antidumping and countervailing duty investigations, reviews, and other administrative proceedings. She has experience dealing with matters concerning foreign trade zones, the regulatory rulemaking process, and proceedings concerning scope and circumvention of antidumping and countervailing duty orders. Patrick Binger Vice President, International - Cargill Protein North America Pat began his career with Excel Corporation (Cargill subsidiary) as a sales trainee in July 1987 in Schuyler, Nebraska. In May 1988, Pat transferred to Cargill’s processed meat group (DFM Foods) as a distributor and national account sales manager located in Atlanta, GA. Pat transferred to Marysville CA in 1990, assuming responsibilities for International account management in Asia and Mexico. In 1996, Pat transferred to Cargill’s Protein headquarters in Wichita, KS transitioning through various roles within the International Division; including product management, international pricing, and commercial export sales management. Pat was named assistant vice president international sales in 2004. Pat was named the vice president of international sales & marketing for the animal protein platform in 2009. In 2014, Pat was named Vice President International for Cargill Protein North America. A role he currently holds A 1986 graduate of Northern (South Dakota) State University, Pat holds a bachelor's degree in Business Marketing. Pat, his wife Emily and 2 children reside in Wichita. Randi Tveitaraas Jack International Development Manager Randi Tveitaraas Jack manages the state’s international trade and investment activities. In this role, she oversees the agency’s efforts to assist Kansas companies in expanding their export sales, as well as working to bring international investment to Kansas. In her 30 years with the state, she has worked with companies in Europe, Asia, Canada, and across Kansas in key industry sectors including aviation, bioscience, and renewable energy. Prior to joining the agency in 1988, Ms. Tveitaraas Jack worked in international marketing at Storage Technology Corporation (now Oracle), a computer peripherals manufacturer. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Colorado State University and an international MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. She is a graduate of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma and has also studied at the University of Madrid in Spain. Tim See Regional Director of Sales- East Coast, Savino Del Bene US Tim See is the Regional Director of Sales- East coast at Savino Del Bene USA; he currently reside in Lombard, IL and work out of our Chicago branch. Tim joined Savino Del Bene in 2003. Tim held positions as Sales Manager, RDM of South America and Sales Representative. Tim owned his own company from 1995 to 2007. Tim graduated in 1994 from Hoffman Estates High school and started his dream of owning his own business after High School. Sold the business in 2007. He enjoys Basketball, ATVING and volunteering at his Church. Proud husband and father of one son Liam who is currently in fifth grade playing football and baseball. Wayne Bell District Director for the Wichita Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration Wayne Bell became the District Director for the Wichita Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) October 27, 2008. His professional background includes extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, combined with a thorough understanding of the small business environment in Kansas. Prior to SBA, Mr. Bell served as Administrative Officer for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the US Department of Homeland Security at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. With TSA he managed human resources, customer service, stakeholder relations, purchasing, and IT contract services for Kansas. Before federal employment, Mr. Bell held leadership positions at Beech Aircraft Company, Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, and with private manufacturing firms in Hutchinson, Kansas. He also gained experience in small business as a partner in a Wichita-based service firm. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Bell attended Wichita State University (WSU) and earned both an Executive MBA and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology. While an undergraduate, he participated in “Shocker Athletics” as a member of the WSU football team. His community service includes work with Consumer Credit Counseling Services, United Way of the Plains, and Real Men Real Heroes, Inc.Mr. Bell lives in Wichita with his wife, Jocelyn and family, they attend Saint Mark United Methodist Church.
