To promote Kansas artists and designers to ensure that every Kansas community has access to high quality design and production, the Kansas Arts Commission is creating a roster of Kansas-based artists, designers, and production companies. The SIGNS Artist Roster is a directory for designers with expertise in visual communication specifically created to complement the Supporting Innovative Growth Through New Signage (SIGNS) grant program of the Kansas Department of Commerce.
Recognizing that downtown buildings are critical economic assets in rural communities, the SIGNS grant is designed to strengthen local economies by improving the visibility and marketability of retail and commercial businesses through high-quality storefront signage. By supporting multiple signage projects within each community, the program helps create a cohesive, attractive commercial environment that draws customers, supports small-business revenue growth, and reinforces the long-term economic vitality of rural downtowns. The grant encourages property owners and business tenants to collaborate with skilled designers and local artists to develop creative, distinctive signs that enhance business identity while respecting standard guidelines and the historic character of Kansas downtowns. The SIGNS Artist Roster is meant to give artists an opportunity to expand or strengthen experience with signage design. Through matching funding and design support, the program elevates the visual appeal and competitiveness of locally owned businesses, contributing to stronger commercial districts and more vibrant, economically resilient communities.
Communities and businesses selected for SIGNS grant funding will be required select and work with an artist from the SIGNS Artist Roster for design consultation and creative services. These services will take place in the spring and summer of 2026. As part of the SIGNS roster, artist fees would be set between $20-$50/hour. If selected by grantees, artists can expect to work with each grantee for a minimum of 10 hours but not to exceed 30 hours. By applying for and being accepted onto the SIGNS Artist Roster, artists are eligible to be selected by SIGNS grantees for collaboration but are not guaranteed nor obligated to participate. Artists on the SIGNS roster are agreeing to these terms only for the initial 2026 SIGNS grant program. Design and artistic services outside of the SIGNS grant program will be based on individual artist rates.
Kansas-based professional individual artists, graphic designers, sign designers, and fabricators are welcome to apply. Applicants must have a history of professional design and/or visual arts and availability to work outside their community regularly.
