Evergy Energy Tip – August

Simple Daily Habits that Cut Summer Energy Use

A handful of simple, everyday habits can help you stay cool while using less energy over the summer!

Rethink your thermostat habits

In the summer, keeping your thermostat 5-8 degrees warmer when you are away can help you save energy. If you have a smart thermostat, you can schedule your home temperature from a smart phone while you are away, so it’s just right when you return.

Want to earn $100? If you’re an Evergy customer and own a compatible smart thermostat, enroll it in Evergy’s Thermostat Program and earn a $100 reward. Don’t have a smart thermostat yet? Get a free or discounted option through Evergy.

Let fans do the heavy lifting

Fans don’t cool rooms, but they create a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler. So, turn fans off when you leave the room and set ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise in the summer to lift warm air up and out of the room.

Block the heat before it builds

Sunlight streaming through windows can quickly heat up your home, so make it a daily habit to close blinds or curtains during peak sun hours. Pay special attention to south- and west-facing windows.

Shift your chores to cooler hours

Many everyday appliances generate heat, especially your oven, dryer and dishwasher. During summer, run appliances early in the morning or at night, or cook with microwaves, air fryers, or outdoor grills.
