Evergy Energy Tip – November

Heat Your Home Safely this Winter

When the temperatures drop, we start looking for ways to stay warm. But some common heating methods can create serious safety risks. Here are some simple tips to help keep your home warm and your family safe all winter long.

  • Never use your oven or stove to heat your home. Ovens and stovetops are designed for cooking, not heating. Using them as a heat source can increase the risk of fire and carbon monoxide exposure.
  • Use space heaters carefully. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from furniture, curtains, blankets, and anything else that can burn. Make sure to turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Practice fireplace safety. Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned annually. Always use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping. If you’re not using your fireplace, keep the damper closed to help prevent drafts and keep warm air inside.
  • Keep vents and heating equipment clear. Make sure furnaces, vents, and registers are free from dust, clutter, and other obstructions so your heating system can operate safely and efficiently.
  • Use the sun when you can. Open curtains on east-facing windows in the morning to let the sun help warm your home.

Seal drafts to keep that heat inside your home. If you are an Evergy customer, find weatherization items like weather stripping, caulk, sealant, door sweeps and more on the Evergy Marketplace to make your home more energy efficient this winter.
