About

Ross Williams is a music educator, live performer, and recording artist based in Lawrence, KS. Known for high-energy guitar compositions that weave intricate melodies with driving rhythms, Ross’s work connects deeply with audiences by balancing structured riffs with spontaneous improvisations. The inherent risk in live improvisation brings the artist and audience into a shared, exhilarating experience, making each performance uniquely engaging. Ross’s writing process is an extension of his practice as a Zen Buddhist, with the focus of the music being to uncover the truth of the moment, otherwise known as the Dharma. The songs serve as both a medium for self-exploration and a meditative journey, inviting listeners to turn inward. The centering of the sacred defines Ross’s artistic voice, producing music that is boundary-dissolving, reflective, and unexpected. In his acoustic playing, he draws inspiration from British guitarist Bert Jansch, fellow Kansan Andy McKee, and modern American Primitive legend Jack Rose. While taking influence from the fingerstyle tradition, Ross uses a flatpick, lending his compositions a unique tonal quality and dynamic approach. Blending these influences with the avant-garde stylings of Sonic Youth—particularly their alternate tunings, exploration of dissonance, and lyrical poetry—Ross crafts a sound that is both hypnotic and powerful. By emphasizing open strings and drones, he creates resonant overtones that form a grounding element in the songs. The drones establish a sonic foundation, the place from which each melody springs forth and returns, while his rhythmic strumming and intricate fingerwork add layers of tension and release. This signature use of drones, combined with reflective melodies and energetic rhythms, brings listeners into the present, creating a transformative listening experience.

Community and Educational Activity Information

Artist Talk: This session would explore the creative processes behind composition and improvisation, providing a behind-the-scenes look into how Ross crafts his pieces. He will share personal strategies for improvisation and composition, including his approach to developing themes and responding to the energy of live performance. Ross will also provide a brief cultural history of drone usage across various musical traditions, demonstrating its role as a foundational and meditative element in music.

Community Workshop: Community members are invited to bring their own string instruments for a hands-on workshop where they will tune to an open chord and learn a simple melody over a drone together. Participants will gain practical experience with drones, with the group divided in half—one half playing a melody on the high strings, and the other maintaining a drone on the low strings. To conclude, the entire group will perform together, blending melody and drone to experience the powerful resonance and collective sound. This inclusive activity not only enhances musical skills but also fosters a sense of shared creativity and connection, making it ideal for participants of all backgrounds, including those who may not usually attend formal music performances.
