Save Energy this Holiday Season
Between the colder weather, holiday lighting, and extra cooking, the holidays can mean more energy use. Here are a few energy-saving tips you can use this holiday season.
- Schedule your heating. Program your smart thermostat to slightly lower temperatures overnight or when the house is empty and set it to warm up just before guests arrive. Evergy customers: Earn a $100 reward by enrolling your eligible smart thermostat in the Evergy Thermostat Program. Don’t have a smart thermostat yet? Get a free or discounted one through Evergy!
- Heat the spaces you need. If a room isn’t being used, close the door to direct warmth where it’s needed most. Close the vents in unused rooms, too.
- Use energy-efficient holiday lights. Use light-emitting diode (LED) holiday light strings. LED light bulbs use at least 75% less energy, and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.
- Use timers for decorations. Holiday lights are cheerful, but it’s easy to forget about them once you’ve gone to bed or left home. Set timers for lights to automatically turn on when it gets dark, and off before you go to bed.
- Use smart power strips. When holiday lights and decorations are plugged individually, it can waste energy and be unsafe. Grouping nearby devices onto one smart power strip will allow you to turn on and shut off everything at once. Plus, you can control your lights remotely from a smart phone! If you’re an Evergy customer, find smart power strips and other energy-efficient products on The Evergy Marketplace.
