For this month’s Spotlighting Prosperity, we are excited to showcase the City of Halstead and the great work they have been doing to help their community prosper.

In the past year, they were awarded a SEED grant, and more recently, a HEAL grant. With assistance from the SEED grant, the Kansas Learning Center for Health facilitated an amazing Outdoor Fitness Equipment project that was recently completed and the library is getting some much needed updates.  Utilizing the HEAL grant, they are expanding the Daphne Mae Café in their downtown.  This will allow more dining seating, event space, and provide a new location for meetings and other larger group activities.

Since 1965, the Kansas Learning Center for Health has been a source for health education, offering 17 programs and hosting over 15,000 visitors annually at the center and through outreach. Visitors explore the 7,000 sq ft facility featuring interactive exhibits, historical displays, and many other great features. In 2023, KLCH will have completed several projects for their local Halstead community: including an expansion of their Community Garden providing free produce to neighbors and museum guests, establishing benches/seating in several areas including their garden, basketball courts, front walkways, and walkways around the newly installed Outdoor Fitness Equipment project.

Ethan Reimer, City Manager states, “The City of Halstead has been able to benefit from several community improvements because of the passion of local volunteer groups and residents, business owners, and non-profits and their ability to work together have we been able to make these happen.  As a community, we are proud of what we have been able to accomplish this year. The Strategic Economic Expansion and Development (SEED) and Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL) programs from the Kansas Department of Commerce, in conjunction with local investment and vision, pushed these multiple projects forward that will all continue to benefit Halstead for years to come.”
