About

Opera Kansas produces intimate operatic productions in an effort to bring opera to the general public. Opera Kansas is committed to making opera accessible by taking performances into Kansas communities by performing in theaters, retirement homes, parks, public places and schools. Our programs include Touring Kansas Communities, Senior Living Outreach, Opera on Location, and OPERAtion EDUCATION our extensive school outreach program. Our Managing Artistic Director is Dr. Paul Brodene Smith. He coordinates the engagement of our local and regional adult and emerging artists.

Primary Program Description

Opera Kansas offers a variety of presentation to fit your entertainment needs.

  • Amahl and the Night Visitors: beginning in 2016 we are offering the chance for communities to bring in our beloved production of this holiday favorite.
  • Kansas Tour: performances are concerts and fun filled or renditions of two or more one act comic operas. These shows are designed to move in and out of theaters, community centers.
  • Senior Living Outreach: performances in an intimate setting.
  • Opera on location: matches plot to place whether it is on a bridge in a park (Comedy on the Bridge) or a comic farce in a medical facility (Dr. Miracle) •OPERAtion Education: these programs integrate standard curriculum with the arts. Programs have included Traveling the Underground Railroad, Two Patriots, Romeo and Juliet: Literature analysis through music.
  • Opera 101: and introduction to opera. This program is a whirlwind journey though the world of opera.
  • “Plains, Prairies, and Rivers: Parlor Songs of the Midwest”. This program presents American music from the early nineteen-hundreds. As a part of the presentation Dr. Smith will perform these wonderful bits of Americana as well as provide historical information about the composers, cover art and cover artists.

Program Fee
  • Fees range from as low as $200 for school outreach performances to $2000 for our touring shows. The cost of Amahl will vary as to how much of the set will be transported.
  • Normally we will include the cost of the educational/community activity within overall performance fee. Fees can be negotiated for larger educational activities.
