About

Abby Bland is an award-winning writer, performer, and comedian based in Kansas City. She was awarded the Central Avenue 2024 Poetry Prize and nominated for Best Poet in KC via The Pitch in 2024. Her one-person spoken word show “Godzilla’s Not A Dinosaur” took home “Best of Venue” at the 2023 KC Fringe and she won “Best Poet” in The Pitch the same year.

Abby has been featured on stages across the country as a competing poet in the National Poetry Slam, Rustbelt Regional, and Woman of the World Slam. She’s also produced her show “Godzilla’s Not a Dinosaur” in multiple fringe festivals, including the Minnesota Fringe and Indy Fringe. She also regularly produces shows in the Kansas City region.

In addition to performing, she has taught writing, publication, and performance workshops for all ages and skill levels from elementary schoolers to adults.

Her work focuses on exploring topics pop culture, mental health, and cultural expectations of the women and femmes. Her poems have appeared in Gyroscope Review, Ghost City Review, From Whispers to Roars, and several other journals and anthologies.

Primary Program Description

Themed Poetry Readings/Performances

Abby can curate readings around specific themes, such as identity, resilience, or feminism, either as a solo performance or inviting other poets to contribute and sparking meaningful discussions among audiences.

Open Mics and Slam Events

Hosting open mic nights or poetry slams can provide a platform for emerging poets to share their work, fostering a sense of community and encouraging local talent.

Youth Outreach Programs

Collaborating with schools and community centers, Abby can create programs tailored for young people, inspiring them to explore poetry as a tool for self-expression and empowerment.

Program Fee

Performance Fee: $750 for a 1-hour performance or artist talk and Q&A

Workshop Fee: $300 for 2-hour customized workshop

Community and Educational Activity Information

Poetry Workshops

Workshops focused on writing and performance techniques, encouraging participants to explore their own voices and express personal narratives. These sessions might cover topics like vulnerability in writing, the use of metaphor, and crafting compelling spoken word pieces.
