Prepare Your Home for Winter Temps
It’s been a little cooler lately. Now is the perfect time to prepare your home so you can be comfortable and save energy when the temperature drops in the winter. Here is a list of things you can do right now.
- Replace your air filter. This is something that should be done every 1 – 3 months. A clean air filter improves air flow, reduces allergens and can help your system run more efficiently.
- Keep the area around your vents clear. Check to make sure carpets, couches, beds and other large pieces of furniture are not blocking vents. Blockages make your heating system work harder!
- Block door drafts. As doors age or the weather changes, you might find gaps around the seams that let air in or out. Use weatherstripping around the door frame to prevent cold air from getting in during the winter.
- Seal drafty windows. Use caulk to seal the outer trim, the area where the window touches the trim, and along the moveable parts of the window. It can save you up to 15% on heating costs. If you’re an Evergy customer, find weatherstripping, caulk and other energy-efficient products on The Evergy Marketplace.
- Rotate your ceiling fan blades. In the winter, fans should rotate clockwise to push the rising warm air back down into the room. Look for a switch on the motor housing (the cylindrical area below the fan blades) or refer to your ceiling fan manual to switch the rotation.
