Evergy Energy Tip – January

Saving Energy at Home: Getting Kids Involved

It’s never too early to teach kids about saving energy, instilling good habits that’ll last throughout their lives. Plus, the cooped-up-inside winter months are the perfect time to start. Here are a few easy ways to get the kids involved in conserving energy at home.

  • Encourage kids to make a habit of turning off lights and electronics when they leave a room.
  • Teach kids the benefits of blinds and drapes. In the winter months, opening drapes allows sunlight to help warm the room, which reduces strain on your heating system. Your kids can help by making it part of their “wake-up” routine.
  • Get kids involved in energy-saving chores. Teach them how to vacuum leaves out of the outside AC unit (when weather permits), vacuum air vents or install new LED light bulbs. If you’re an Evergy customer and you don’t have LED light bulbs, you can purchase them as well as many other energy-efficient products on The Evergy Marketplace.
  • Teach kids about the power of the thermostat. In the winter, keeping your thermostat 5 – 8 degrees cooler when no one is around can save you energy and money. Evergy customers: Earn a $100 reward by enrolling your eligible smart thermostat in the Evergy Thermostat Program. Don’t have a smart thermostat yet? Get a free or discounted one through Evergy.
