José Faus is a muralist with a long history of community engagement. He has painted murals in the Kansas City Metropolitan area and co-led mural projects in Mexico in the state of Michoacán. He also was a US Cultural Ambassador for a mural project in Santa Cruz Bolivia.
Jose paints in a variety of styles including narrative murals that convey histories of place. He also does abstract work. He likes to engage the community in conversations regarding place, histories, customs, significant contributors to flesh out ideas that resonate and help community members feel ownership in the final project.
He is willing to work within the constraints of budgets available to communities. Original design negotiable but within the realm of $350 to $750. Production Fee apart from design phase can range from $5,000 to $40,000. This is not inclusive of equipment rental and materials such as paint and application materials.
Always available to engage in community workshops at a negotiable fee dependent on resources. Travel parameters include a fee of $250 per day if within a 250 mile radius of Kansas City to $500 for longer distances. Longer than 250 miles would include an overnight stay.
Can engage with community stakeholders to conceptualize appropriate themes and subject matter. This will also involve preparatory discussions and workshops to help streamline and facilitate familiarity with mural techniques and history of public works. This is a conversation meant to provide community buy-in to a work.
Suitable scaffolding is required for heights up to 25 feet. Lifts or booms desirable for surfaces higher than 25 feet.
The latest mural project in profile photo involved a narrative recreation of the 1951 flood and its impact on the community of Armourdale — a community that suffered severe damage and subsequent neglect. After a series of meeting a design was present and modified following input from stakeholders. The mural was finished in November of 2025 and will be included in the VisitKC website of local murals.
