What is your background? I graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Sports Marketing. I have been able to transition this degree to “plumbing marketing!”
What sets your business apart from your competitors? Lutz Plumbing has continued to provide consistent quality and priority plumbing services to long-term and new customers no matter their circumstances. We employ Master Plumbers who have proven they can diagnose and solve plumbing problems. Our team is also available on Saturdays for service calls and with no up charges. Lutz Plumbing specializes in drain cleaning services. We have access to the latest cameras and hydro–jetting technology to solve drain problems We have developed our own signature Lutz Loyalty Club for our customers. Club membership includes “members only” a variety of perks and benefits including special pricing on evenings, weekends and holidays for service calls, priority scheduling, extended warranty options on our products, and special offers, too. We believe our Lutz Loyalty Club helps customers by easing stress while saving time, money and energy.
How is your business involved in your community? Sponsorships, volunteering, and memberships in local and national associations keep Lutz Plumbing actively involved in our community. We provide a service that many non-profit organizations will need at one time or another. We are most glad to assist them with our plumbing services when we can. For example, Lutz Plumbing has assisted Sheffield Place which has aided more than 1200 families in making the difficult journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency. We also provided services to Reconciliation Services, Johnson County (Kansas) Christmas Bureau, and Growing Futures Preschool, a Head Start education program based in Johnson County, Kansas. Our wonderful employees gather clothing items for charities and to a variety of other supplies, too. We have made financial donations to Challenge Air for Kids and Kansas City Shrine Rodeo and Christmas Fantasy.
What is your business philosophy/mission statement? Our official mission statement is “to provide our customers the best experience possible through our unique, next level service, every day, every time.” Lutz Plumbing offers a diverse selection of services; however, we never compromise quality of service for quantity’s sake. Hiring a plumber at Lutz Plumbing means our customers are guaranteed skilled professionals who take their work seriously. Whether our customers require residential or commercial services and supplies, they can depend on our team to solve their plumbing issues in a very timely manner. Customer safety is a top priority. We proudly offer zero contact appointment and estimates from one of our knowledgeable expert plumbers.
Why should your business be included in the minority & women business spotlight? Many women and minorities are just not aware of the opportunities now available to them in both leadership and employment in the blue-collar business segment in Kansas. I believe that my profile can bring this to their attention and encourage them to pursue it, too.
What do you like about doing business in Kansas? Kansas appreciates the contributions that locally owned and family-owned enterprises make to the community and our economy. The Kansas Department of Commerce has a variety of programs and activities that encourage the growth and development of small businesses, too. Also, my family and I have found that people making their home in Kansas and the metro Kansas City area tend to be kinder and genuine and courteous with which to do business.
What inspired you to start your business? What inspired me to continue the family legacy at Lutz Plumbing and assume the ownership were three things. First, I believe the plumbing services the Lutz family has provided to customers does makes a positive difference. I credit this feeling to the long-term relationships we have and the many referrals we receive. Secondly, I wanted to continue to develop a positive and supportive work culture for all of the employees we have now and will have in the future. And, thirdly, I believed I could set an example of leadership by a female entrepreneur and leader in the traditionally male dominated service industry.
What was the biggest “win” in your business’ history? The biggest win is regarding our continued business growth in the last 3 years. First, I strategized and developed the marketing programs and plans to increase customer loyalty, build awareness about my business and generate additional revenues for Lutz Plumbing. As a result, we have had record breaking growth that resulted in our inclusion in the Kansas City Business Journal’s Top 25 Women-Owned Businesses of the Year listing for the first time. I have been able to hire additional personnel and purchase more service trucks. It gave us the confidence to know we are succeeding at a higher level.
What’s one valuable lesson you’ve learned that you would share with other business owners? My advice to other business owners is to become an energized learner. I recommend joining groups with like-minded people and learn everything you can about your industry and what it takes to get from where you are to where you want to be. Attend industry conferences. Take training and business development courses. Subscribe to industry magazines. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, too. They will save a tremendous amount of trial and error by learning from people who have been there before they have.
