There are many tips and tricks for saving energy around the house, but are all of them actually helpful? We are busting some common myths about energy efficiency.
Myth #1: Turning off the AC when you aren’t home saves energy
False. Leaving your AC on but setting it a few degrees higher when you are away in the summer is more efficient than turning it off completely. If you have a smart thermostat, you can adjust your home’s temperature from a smartphone while you are out and about. Evergy customers: Earn a $100 reward by enrolling your eligible smart thermostat in the Evergy Thermostat Program. Don’t have a smart thermostat yet? Get a free or discounted one through Evergy!
Myth #2: Closing vents in unused rooms saves energy
False. Closing vents can cause uneven heating or cooling and may trigger your HVAC to work harder, using more energy, not less.
Myth #3: Ceiling fans cool rooms
False. Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a wind chill effect. If you leave the room, turn off the fan to save energy. Also, in the summer, fans should rotate counterclockwise to lift warm air up and out of the room.
Myth #4: Air leaks can matter more than insulation in the summer
True! Small leaks around windows and doors let hot air in and cool air out. In the summer, this can have a bigger immediate impact than insulation alone. Use weatherstripping around door frames and caulk to seal drafty areas around windows to save energy.
