Evergy Energy Tip – October

Unplug ‘Energy Vampires’ and Save on Your Bill

Did you know there are appliances in your home that consume electricity even when they’re not being actively used? As long as devices like your TV, printer or coffee maker are plugged in, they’ll add to your energy bill. Appliances like that are called ‘energy vampires.’ Here is a list of the biggest household energy vampires and how you can save on your energy bill.

  • TVs and video game consoles are designed to receive signals from remotes, Wi-Fi and more. Therefore, even when they’re turned off, they remain in standby mode while plugged in to continue to receive those signals. Unplugging those electronics when they’re not in use can cut down on energy waste.
  • Small kitchen appliances like microwaves, electric kettles and coffee makers use energy to power a digital display or internal clock. Either unplug those devices when they’re not in use or invest in basic appliances without timers like stovetop kettles.
  • Thermostats and HVAC equipment require a lot of energy to function, but it’s not always practical to turn these devices off completely. To reduce wasted energy, invest in energy-efficient HVAC equipment and install a smart thermostat. If you are an Evergy customer, find out how our heating and cooling rebate can save you up to $1,000 on a new energy-efficient system. Also, if you don’t already have a smart thermostat, you can get a free one through Evergy when you enroll in Evergy’s Thermostat Program
  • Phones and tablets are often left to charge overnight, even though they typically only require two or three hours to charge fully. Unplug your chargers whenever possible and limit charging time to when you are awake and can disconnect your devices when the battery is full.
